SMALLPOX MASS VACCINATION CLINIC READINESS PLAN FOR REGION 21
(Comprising the towns of Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Madison and North Branford)

Mass smallpox vaccination clinics will require large numbers of volunteers. Some of these volunteers will need to have medical qualifications, (Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists) but most volunteer tasks will be appropriate for the general public.

Click Here to obtain a copy of a Volunteer Registration Form, which you may complete and return, if you would like to volunteer for a clinic. The following is a general description of volunteer tasks and the number of volunteers needed per day for each task at each of the two vaccination sites. More detailed, site-specific instructions will be added to this website in the future.

List of Non-Medical Volunteer Positions Needed for Mass Smallpox Vaccination Clinics:

Triage: (MD, PA, RN, LPN, EMT) 4 needed per day. Triage personnel will direct ill patients and potential smallpox case contacts and family members of potential smallpox case contacts to proper location at clinic site.

Medical Screeners for Detailed Medical Evaluation and Counseling: (MD, PA, RN, LPN) 14 needed per day. Medical Screeners will review patient history of those with potential contraindications to the vaccine and answer detailed medical questions.

Physician Evaluators: (MD) 4 needed per day. Physician Evaluators will evaluate and/or examine triaged ill people and provide backup counseling to potential contacts of smallpox cases and those identified with contraindications by Medical Screeners. Physician Evaluators will also assist with any immediate medical problems following vaccination.

Vaccinators/Assistants: (MD, PA, RN, LPN) 32 needed per day. Vaccinators and Assistants will administer the smallpox vaccine and witness the administration of vaccine, fill out vaccination cards for each patient and collect medical forms. Vaccinators and Assistants can relieve each other during their shift.

Vaccine Preparation Personnel: (Pharmacists, Pharmacy Assistants) 4 needed per day. Vaccine Preparation Personnel will reconstitute vaccine and keep track of lot numbers, etc.

EMT: 2 needed per day. EMTs will assist with medical emergencies such as fainting, etc.

Exit Review Personnel: (MD, PA, RN, LPN, EMT, Public Health) 4 needed per day. Exit Review Personnel will answer any final questions about vaccination site care, adverse event symptoms and/or non-take reporting procedures and follow-up, etc.

In addition to these defined positions, additional General Support, Mental Health and Transportation assistance may be needed.

If mass vaccination is initiated, volunteers will be advised to check this website for detailed information as to their work assignments and hours of volunteering. Parking at both clinic sites will be at a premium and it is anticipated that a shuttle bus will be used to transport volunteers between the two clinic sites and more convenient parking. Volunteers will be provided an identification card for access to the clinic sites.

Food, beverages and snacks will be provided to the clinic volunteers. The selection will necessarily be very limited. If you have special dietary needs or prefer your own cooking, you should plan to bring your food. There can be no guarantee of refrigeration for volunteer's food.
