TOWN OF
MADISON ROAD EXCAVATION PERMIT
Any
excavation or activity within the Town's right of way,
which may potentially disturb the existing integrity of
the road system, shall require a Road Opening Permit.
These permits shall be obtained from the Town Engineer's
office prior to any road or shoulder excavation.
Generally these permits are free, however the Town
Engineer may require the submission of a performance
guarantee ( in the form of cash or certified check ) to
insure conformance with the following requirements. The
performance guarantee shall be returned, in full, upon
completion of all work to the Town Engineer's
satisfaction.
Applicants
shall comply with the following requirements:
- All
subsurface utilities shall be located prior to any

- Adequate
traffic control must be provided. At no time shall the
road be made completely impassable.
- It is
recommended that the current OSHA accepted shoring or
slope stabilizing methods be used.
- Material
excavated from the trench may be used as backfill
unless it is deemed unsuitable. Backfill shall be
placed and compacted in lifts no greater than two (2)
feet, to an elevation 15 inches below finish
grade.
- A 12
inch base coarse shall be constructed of well graded,
1 inch bank run gravel or processed aggregate,
compacted thoroughly.
- Final
patching shall consist of a well compacted hot
bituminous concrete mix 3 inches in thickness. All
broken surface edges shall be shall cut, and all final
surface edges cleaned and prepared with a tack coating
prior to placement of the final patch.. Temporary
patching ( cold patch ) may be acceptable for a period
no greater than six (6) months, with the submission of
a performance guarantee.
- In
all cases, an inspection by the Town Engineer shall be
required prior to the placement of a permanent patch.
