Meet the Board of Selectmen

First Selectman Fillmore McPherson moved to Madison in 1979 with his artist wife Joan and their three children. He was employed by Schick Razors and Blades in Milford, retiring in 1997 as Director of Logistics. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Industrial Management, both from MIT. He served with the US Navy, active and reserve, for 32 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. He is currently the Vice President of Finance for the Madison Land Conservation Trust and is on the Board of Directors of CLOUT Cares, a small non-profit benefiting AIDS/HIV widows and orphans in a small village in Kenya. Previous town service includes eight years on the Board of Finance (four as Chairman), the High School Building Committee, and the Town Plan Advisory Committee. Community service includes the ACT II Thrift Shop, Meals on Wheels, SARAH, Boy Scout Troop and the DHHS Band Boosters.

Al Goldberg has resided in Madison since 1975. He received a B.A. in psychology from The Johns Hopkins University and an M.B.A. in finance and the management of non-profit institutions from the University of Chicago. He is currently the Executive Director of a charitable foundation and served as the Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of the Connecticut Hospital Association for more than 30 years. In the community, Goldberg served as a Board Officer of the Madison Visiting Nurse Association for 15 years and has been a Board Officer of the Madison Lakes Association for more than 20 years. He recently served as the President of Temple Beth Tikvah. He was a member of the Board of Finance for two years, and was elected to serve a term as Madison’s First Selectmen His two children attended Madison Public Schools and he served as a coach on numerous Madison youth sports teams.

William E. Gladstone moved to Madison with his wife and two children in 2000. Bill was a founding member of TEAM (Taxpayers Education Alliance of Madison) and was first elected to the Board of Selectmen in 2005. Born in New York, Bill lived in Evanston, Illinois before moving to Madison. A Yale graduate, Bill is an author and creator of sailing education and training materials. He is an avid sailor and skier.

Joseph A. MacDougald came to Madison in 1993 and lives with his wife, Lisa, his three children and much of his extended family. Prior to his appointment and then election to the Board of Selectmen, Joe served for over ten years on Madison's Planning and Zoning Commission, serving his last six years as Chairman. Joe graduated from Brown University with an AB in Mathematics. He also holds a JD from the University of Connecticut School of Law; an MBA from New York University; and a Masters in Environmental Management from Yale University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Until arranging for the company’s sale to a Fortune 500, Joe was the General Counsel, then President of Pentron Corporation, a biomaterials company located in Wallingford CT of which he also participated in the ownership group. Joe is a longtime member of the Adjunct Faculty at the University of Connecticut School of Law and most recently served as a Visiting Scholar from 2009-2011. He expects to return in that capacity in Spring 2011. A frequent guest lecturer at various institutions on matters involving land use and environmental law, in the fall of 2010, he will be teaching land use policy at Yale University. He was the past treasurer and former board member to the non-profit senior care facility of the Mary Wade Home in New Haven and is involved in various Brown University activities. Joe was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board of Selectmen from February 2008 through November 2009 and was elected for a full term in November 2009. Joe holds several patents in biomaterials and is published, writes, and researches the interplay between land use law, environmental law and the Constitution.
