Dear Madison Business,

I’m sure you are all aware of the recent increase of Covid-19 positive cases throughout the Town of Madison, State of Connecticut and the nation. Madison has always taken a proactive approach regarding the safety of our community during this pandemic that has gripped the world. Working together with businesses, residents, and visitors of the town, we all share responsibility as stakeholders in the health and vitality of Madison.

As we enter the holiday season our goal is to keep Madison open for business. In addition to adhering to the required State guidelines issued for your particular business sector, we expect all establishments to immediately contact the Madison Health Department at (203) 245-5681 if a member of your workforce tests positive for COVID-19. This will help us start the contact tracing process as quickly as possible, provide personalized guidance about reducing any additional spread, and enable your business to get back to normal as quickly as possible.

We are also offering a few recommendations for businesses to assist us in quickly mitigating additional community spread. These include taking the following preventative measures:

  1. Notify the community of any positive cases within your workforce as soon as possible, if recommended by the Madison Health Department. Depending on the specifics of each case, it might substantially benefit members of the public to be made aware if they were in your establishment at a time an employee was infected with COVID-19.
  2. Establish a voluntary contact list for any visitors to your establishment that may have had contact with your employees. Contact information such as the name, phone number and/or email of just one person per group/party can be life-saving in the event that someone tests positive for the virus. This will help close a gap in the timely notification of those individuals involved and assist in contact tracing in our community. Attached is a possible template to follow which you can photocopy and use. You may keep the record electronically, also. However, we ask that you keep your record for at least thirty days.

While these recommendations are strictly voluntary in nature and not required, we believe they can be extremely beneficial to protecting both your employees and your customers. Please note that Town officials will be visiting businesses over the coming weeks to ensure an understanding of the new guidance and answer any questions regarding possible enforcement actions if there is a violation.

We also want to remind you that our Long-term Recovery Committee (formed in June 2020 with the objective to plan, manage and coordinate the long-term community and economic recovery of Madison in the wake of the public health emergency) is here to assist you with routine questions or issues regarding State guidelines and enforcement. And finally, we want to emphasize that this latest surge demonstrates the importance of local business owners and employees staying up-to-date on the latest information. We encourage everyone in the business community to sign up for the Town of Madison’s new communications system called Madison Alerts, which will provide important community information, as well as the First Selectwoman updates. You can subscribe through the town website at https://www.madisonct.org/MadisonAlerts. This includes an app called Everbridge that can be downloaded to provide push notifications to your phone for important information. The app can be found in the App store for both iPhone and Android devices.
