Notary Public

Notary services will only be provided when a Notary Public is available.

As a courtesy to the residents of Madison, the Town Clerk's Office provides some free notary public services during office hours. *Non-residents will be charged a fee of $5 per stamp. Our procedure is that the Town Clerks and all other Town employees who are notary publics will notarize most documents with the proper proof of identification.

Limitations

Because of the liability, we have been advised by the state and/or Town Counsel not to notarize wills, living wills, power of attorney forms, estate and trust documents, I-9 employment verifications, and any document that will be recorded on the Town of Madison Land Records including documents related to that recording.

Remember, the purpose of a Notary Public is to witness the signing of said document, so do not sign anything until you appear in person. Please bring the entire document with you.

The free service is for personal documents of Madison residents, not for the purpose of a resident's company or business. However, resident businesses and all non-resident documents can be notarized for the $5 charge.

Additionally, from time to time the Town Clerk's office is not available to notarize documents. Notice will be posted on our door. Use of other providers of notary services around town can be sought during these times.
