Conservation Commission Natural Resource Inventory Walk

Saturday, August 17, 2019

CONSERVATION COMMISSION
2019 Natural Resource Inventory Walk Schedule

1. Description: A natural resources inventory (NRI) compiles important naturally occurring resources such as forests, wetlands, surface waters, and farmland within a given locality (e.g. municipality, watershed, or region). Cultural resources, such as historic sites, stone walls, scenic vistas, and recreation areas, are also included in an NRI. Information is presented in a series of maps and an accompanying report with narrative descriptions, supporting data tables, and recommendations.

An NRI is essential for comprehensive land-use planning that proactively considers a community's land and water resources and provides the foundation for open space planning and protection, zoning updates, conservation overlay districts, critical environmental areas, and other municipal plans and policies. NRI data will be stored on the Town’s web site.

2. Tools: Epicollect5 – a free data collection mapping app.

3. 2019 Schedule (with future events to be added):
  • April 20th   Ox Pasture Sanctuary 9:30 AM
  • May 4th   Rockland Preserve (Renee’s Way Parking Lot) 1:00 PM
  • June 15th Salt Meadow Park 9:30 AM
  • July 22nd Surf Club Park 5:00 PM
  • August 17th Rettich Preserve 9:30 AM

4. Participation is open to the public. Attendees should come prepared for outdoor rambling wearing the appropriate footwear and protection from sun and insects (ticks & mosquitos). Though not required, bringing a smart phone preloaded with the free Epicollect5 app would be extremely useful. Conservation Commissioners will provide instructions prior to the inventory walk.
