COVID-19 Update - July 8, 2020

COVID-19 updates

Dear Residents,

Madison currently has 161 positive cases of COVID-19, 10 of which are considered active.  This reflects five new cases and one new death over the last week, indicating we continue to see community spread in our town albeit at very low levels.  Our hearts are with those families suffering from the impact of this terrible disease. Although I recognize we are all eager to enjoy our summer here in Madison to its fullest, we must remember the virus is still a threat to everyone in our community. Please exercise social distancing and mask wearing in public when distancing is not possible, and wash your hands frequently.  The more vigilant we are today, the sooner we can reach a full recovery.

We are fortunate that Connecticut continues to see downward trends in our metrics for the virus, but national trends present a very different story. To protect us from resurgence, the Governor announced on Monday he would postpone the roll-out of Phase 3 of the state’s re-opening plan. Phase 3 was set to take place in mid-July, but due to the number of cases growing in other states, it will now be delayed. The Governor has also expanded the travel advisory, which requires people entering our state to quarantine for 14 days, to include 3 new additional states, bringing it to a total of 19. More details on quarantine requirements can be found on the State of Connecticut’s COVID-19 Response website.

Many of you may have learned about the sewer main break that occurred in New Haven on July 6th, which resulted in almost 2.1 million gallons of raw sewage entering the Mill River and Long Island Sound. The discharge is expected to primarily affect the cities of New Haven, West Haven and the towns of East Haven and Branford. However, Madison’s Health Department is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with DEEP on testing.  If it is determined there is a risk to areas along our shoreline, we will close our beaches immediately and notify the community.

Enjoy the summer weather and please stay safe and healthy Madison.

Peggy Lyons
First Selectwoman
