Good afternoon, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with an important emergency update.
A winter storm warning will be in effect for our area starting today at 2 p.m. until 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations in the range of 12 to 16 inches. Snow will begin between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. tonight and is forecasted to become very heavy at times between 1:00 a.m. - 5:00 a.m., with snowfall rates between 1.5” – 3.0” per hour. Winds as high as 45 MPH are forecasted along the coast so make sure to secure any loose items on your home or in your yard, including any holiday decorations. Power outages are also expected so please make advance preparations for possible loss of electricity, internet and cell phone services.
Road conditions are expected to be hazardous so avoid any unnecessary travel. Please make every effort to keep the roads clear for Public Works trucks and emergency vehicles. A reminder that no on-street parking is permitted to keep streets cleared for plowing. Cars parked on-street in the downtown area will be towed at the owner’s expense.
I also want to alert residents that the COVID testing site at Hammonasset will be closed tomorrow due to the forecasted weather conditions, but will re-open for normal operations on Friday.
