Good afternoon, this is First Selectwoman Peggy Lyons with an important emergency update.
As a final parting gift from the year 2020, we are expecting a strong winter storm to develop tonight and lead into Christmas Day. Starting tonight, winds from the south are forecast to increase during the evening and into the early morning hours after midnight. Winds may gust as high as 65 - 70 MPH at times around daybreak, especially along the coast and across any hilltops. We do not expect Santa’s ride to be slowed by these winds, but for his safety please make sure to secure any loose items in your yard, including any holiday decorations.
Tomorrow, Christmas Day, heavy rainfall is expected in the 2.0” – 4.0” range, which may also cause moderate stream and river flooding. Due to expected tide levels corresponding with high winds, a coastal flood warning has been issued. In addition, basement flooding may occur as a result of ground water levels so please prepare accordingly.
Power outages are expected in our area so please make advance preparations for possible loss of electricity, internet and cell phone services. If you need to report that your power is out or have questions about restoration, contact Eversource directly at (800) 662-7764. If you see electrical lines or equipment on the ground or if you see fire, smoke or arcing from electrical equipment, call 911. If you are simply reporting a tree down with no power lines involved, please call the routine number of Public Works (203) 245-5611 or the Police Department at (203) 245-6500.
Despite this stormy visit from Mr. Grinch, I want to wish all of Madison a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas and New Year. And give a special thank you to all our first responders, public works crews, and healthcare professionals who will be working throughout this storm. We are grateful for your hard work and dedication.
